MODAL VERBS are really the backbone and main base of communication in the English language and when used correctly allow you to express things with real meaning and clarity.

They are divided into basic groups that cover:

  • ABILITY             Can, Could
  • PERMISSION   Can, Could, May, Might (can be used and is simular to May).
  • ADVICE             Should, Ought to
  • OBLIGATION    Must, Have to
  • POSSIBILITY    May, Might, Can, Could

WARNING           Could is also the past of Can, so be careful and make sure you understand its context and use.

The most important rule to remember is that can, could, may, might, should, ought to, must, have to along with going to are all followed by the bare infinitive of the next verb, ALWAYS!

Modal verbs take on a future meaning when followed by BE.

Shall     Offer / Suggestion

Should     Advice / Suggestion

May     Permission / Present or Future Possibility

Might     Permission Present or Future Possibility

Must     Obligation or Necessity

Ought to     What’s Right & Correct / Advice / Prediction
